Each new semester brings with it a sense of optimism, of new possibilities – whether it’s the new set of classes, the opportunity to start with a clean slate and to learn from your missteps in previous semester(s)… but at the beginning of the spring semester it can be a little harder to see some of these good things because the weather… well, the weather can be downright gloomy. For the record, the spring, summer, and fall weather are each awesome in their own way… winter is only the sorbet that cleanses our palate and helps put the other seasons into perspective, I swear.
So, it’s a gloomy Friday here in Pittsburgh weather-wise. The days are still short and the gray, overcast sky isn’t helping matters. My back is telling me that if it were colder that this would all be snow in need of a good shoveling, so at least some of my muscles can see an upside to the weather today.
But this doesn’t mean that there aren’t signs of life and the renewal that spring provides… and I’m not talking about the “spring is only 92 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes away as I type this” stuff – you just need to know where to look.
This week on campus there was a student organization fair for the MANY clubs and organizations to bring in new members and we are in the midst of sorority and fraternity recruitment, also bringing in new members – the lifeblood, if you will, for any organization. Being around these student groups as they go through their own process of renewal is exciting – there’s no other way to put it. These groups are responsible for so much of the activity on campus – they are what makes the campus come alive and make it such a special place.
The winter months also bring the start of a lot of the admissions events where we bring our accepted students to campus to let them experience a slice of what makes our Bluff so special, so unique. We’ll be hosting prospective students for a premiere of a play, Rust on February 18th and a basketball game on February 19th. And Preview Day will be March 18th – lots of good stuff coming – not just the events, but a step in the process of renewing the Bluff and our College.
Realistically, and this is no shot at Punxsutawney Phil, but whether or not he sees his shadow on February 2nd, spring is already here, even if the weather channel says not for another 92 days.
