Rockstars Won’t Make you a Rockstar: Safer alternatives to energy drinks

Every morning some if not all people have some kind of drink in their hand – tea, coffee, a Starbucks latte, water, or some kind of energy drink. I get it, you’re tired and you just want to wake up. But did you know that coffee makes you even more tired? You finish coffeeyour first cup and you’re still tired, so you go for cup #2… and you’re STILL tired.. Why isn’t this coffee waking me up!!?!??!!? The reason is because you are dehydrating yourself. Whatever you do, don’t get that third cup.

What you need is more water, not more coffee. Try it out by starting off by drinking a cup (or 2) of water PER cup of coffee. If you want to wake up energized, start by drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up, and before you get that terribly unhealthy donut, get the apple instead. A bottle of water and a nice, crisp apple are all you need if you’re on the go.

Now, Rockstars (and energy drinks in general) – I’m sure you’ve heard more than enough times how bad they are for you – I’ve only had like 10 of them in the last 4 years. A good friend of mine has about 4 each day.  I was very concerned so I told her I would stop eating bad foods for a week if she would stop drinking energy drinks. Long story short – we both completed the challenge successfully but most importantly, she learned that she does NOT need an energy drink to teach a high energy spinning class. That’s what this was all about. She instead turned to tea, and excessive amounts of water. Since she wasn’t able to drink her Rockstars, I decided that I could. I was on my third one of the week until I started to feel sick. 4 and a half hours after I finished it, this can of danger shot my blood pressure through the roof and made my heart beat out of my chest so hard that I was about to call everyone in my family to tell them that I love them. To say the least, that was my last energy drink I’ll ever have. Water is wonderful. That is you.

Now, the alternatives?

Water – Do what I suggested earlier and drink a cup (or bottle!) of water when you first wake up – try to get a whole 16 ounces down before you even go to your first class. In a normal day, you should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water (so if you were 120 pounds, you should be drinking 60 ounces of water a day – that’s only 2 huge water bottles.. that’s not bad!) It’s amazing how great it makes you feel!

Yerba Mate – Yerba Mate is the natural way to go for energy. It’s made from leaves. It as is strong as coffee, as beneficial as tea, and makes you feel as good as chocolate does. The leaves of the tree that the leaves are from have 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, and a ton of antioxidants – it has everything you need to survive. You can French press it, drink it hot, cold, with milk, honey, or iced with lemon – the ways to make it are endless. And!!! it won’t stop your heart.

Green Tea – Green tea is my personal favorite. It is good hot, but I like it better cold. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that are fabulous for your metabolism, brain function, diabetes, heart disease, weight loss, cholesterol, depression, blood pressure, and it’s good for your skin!

So, all of this in a nutshell (ha, no pun intended) – drink water with your coffee, drink more water, and don’t get any more of those energy drinks – try the alternatives. Save your money, and your heart.

See ya on the flip side,

Sarah
