Ask anybody who knows me, I’m a Steelers fan.
My collection of jerseys, t shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, and even a Steelers swimsuit, added to my Steeler car accessories and 4 pairs of Steelers earrings, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that I love the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I was raised in a house where Sunday’s meant football and lots of cooking. SuperBowl Sunday falls on my or my mom’s birthday every couple of years, and it’s my favorite way to celebrate. While I have lived in Baltimore for the last 8 years, I was born in Steelers nation and that has never left me, even after moving to enemy territory.
My love for football coupled with my love for hockey (I’ll save that story for a different blog post) is what drove me back to Pittsburgh for college.
The strangest thing about my unwavering love for the Steelers is that I’ve never been to a Steelers game. I’ve never even been to Heinz Field.
Until last night.
At around 6 p.m., my roommate told me her friend had 2 tickets to the game and he wasn’t going so they were her’s if she wanted them. You can only imagine my excitement when she asked if I wanted to go with her.
We were stuffed onto the T with everyone else and headed to the North Shore.
That’s when I had the pleasure of watching the Steelers play their most entertaining game of the season, at least in my opinion, and defeat the Texans, 30-23.
A scoring frenzy in the dying minutes of the 1st half, a fumble recovery by Troy Polamulu (which is probably my favorite moment), a touchdown pass thrown by Antonio Brown, and most importantly, a Steeler win, made up the best Monday night of college thus far.
I went to watch football last night and I got an experience. I wasn’t just sitting in my room, yelling at a tv by myself. I was part of Steelers Nation last night. From kickoff down to the very last second, I was a part of the game and I was cheering on the Steelers with every bit of energy I had.
Maybe this seems a bit dramatic, a bit over the top, especially if you go to games all the time. But for me, this was a first, this was something I’ve been begging for every year. This was the game I’ve been dreaming about going to since I was a little kid.
While people who get paid to talk about football are saying last night’s game could very well be the turning point in this season for the now 4-3 Steelers, I’m still in awe that I was finally at a Steelers game.
